History of Hardin Farms

Hardin Farms can be traced all the way back to the late 1800's. It all started when Thomas Jefferson Hardin married Bettie Eugenia Hall.  Between 1892 and 1907 they had eight children together: unnamed son, Edward Clifton (Ned), Ethyl, Joseph Carrol (Joe), Francis (Little Frank), Leo Jefferson, Elizabeth Mary (Bess), and Nina Adelaide.  Three children passed away during this time.

Tragedy again struck this family, when in Feb 1908 Thomas Jefferson Hardin passed away.  This left Bettie to raise her five remaining children on her own.  Not only did she raise them, she accomplished the feat of sending 4 of the 5 children to college.  They 4 were very successfully in their careers.  Edward Clifton stayed to help Bettie run her farm and a cotton gin.  Stories tell it that she farmed by share cropping and by taking borders into her home.

Not only was she savvy business wise, but she made the most out of everything she raised.  She raised chickens and used the meat to make chicken tamales, used the feathers to make pillows, and crushed the bones and fed it back to the chickens.  Bettie wasted nothing, she had a use for everything.  She was a very smart and successful woman.  The family has grown a lot over the years.  We hope to keep the farm that Thomas Jefferson Hardin started and that Bettie Eugenia Hardin supported her family with, in the family for generations to come.
